Cafe Sketchwalk 1.1 - L'Etoile Cafe

To contact us Click HERE

Started the day meeting up with friends at L'Etoile Cafe at Owen Road. I was there for brunch and had their delicious french toast with scrambled eggs and bacon. It was a delicious fare - not too greasy nor was the maple syrup accompanying the toast too sweet. There was even a nice hint of cinnamon in the syrup. I had their flat white to wash the brunch down... it was so good, I had two - coffees that is.

However, what must be the main draw of the place is the environment. Set like a French-influenced Japanese cafe, the place has a charm and quaintness that blends itself beautifully into the quiet and comfortably appointed interiors.

This is a definite place to visit for some chill time alone or with friends.

Costa Coffee at Vivocity

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/42/CostaLogo.svg/150px-CostaLogo.svg.pngThis is the first time I've tried Costa Coffee. They have other outlets at Chevron House and Raffles City. However, I have not noticed them till they opened at Vivocity. When I tried their latte (my 'standard' for testing barista skills) I found it bitter and ashy and the milk was not sweet and rather thin. I do hope the barista's skills improve.

Costa Coffee started when Bruno and Sergio Costa founded a coffee roastery in Lambeth, London in 1971, supplying local caterers and coffee shops with their slow-roasted blend mocha Italia. Costa branched out to retailing coffee in 1978, when their first store opened in Vauxhall Bridge Road, London.
In 1995, the business was acquired by Whitbread, becoming a wholly owned subsidiary. In 2009 Costa celebrated the opening of their 1,000th store - in Cardiff. In December 2009, Costa Coffee agreed to acquire Coffee Heaven for £36 million, adding 79 stores in central and eastern Europe. By the end of 2010 the company had overtaken Starbucks in the UK, reaching a 37.6% market share measured by revenues.

60¢ for a moment of nostalgia...

Kueh tutu - an expensive form of nostalgia...

Kueh Tutu is a traditional delicacy and a uniquely Singapore dish that was invented right here. Made primarily with rice flour or glutinous rice flour, the light snack contains either ground peanut and sugar or shredded coconut as its filling. The typical method of preparation involves rapid steaming of the flour and the filling. Once ready, the Tutu is served on pandan leaves to add fragrance.
I remember I used to have them at 20¢ each, then 30¢ each and by the time I was in my early teens, it was 50¢ each. Now? It's a whopping $3 for a set of 5. You do the math.

Damian's 30th Anniversary

To contact us Click HERE
I was lucky enough to be invited to do a tasting at Damian's 30th Anniversary dinner.  This is a very nice set of menu of 4 course meal.  I know you missed the January deal, of $30 for a 3-course dinner like the one I'm about to tell you how good it is.  But for the entire month of February,  it's Spaghetti and Meatball Fridays for $8.30 in honor of their start year of 1983.  In March, they are having the return of classic dishes daily, chosen by their servers. For start, we were greeted by Johnny Mandola, he was very hospitable and it's like welcoming people to his home.  He made sure all of his guests are taken care of.
We started out with shrimp brochette h'orderves.  It's quite nice and tasty, but didn't want to fill up on bread, we got more to go.Once we sat down, we had the Mona Lisa salad.  It's very unique is that it has mixed greens, feta cheese, and roasted almonds.  Together with the balsamic dressing, it's a very sweet start.  No, seriously, it is kinda sweet and you get that as a mix with everything in the same bite. Right after the salad, they brought out the Ravioli for the antipasti course.  It's really well done, the only thing is that it's a sweet potato ravioli, which made me felt double starched.  Personally, having been here, I think I would've selected the gnocchi instead, which has spinach and cream in a tomato sauce, much more well balanced and less likely fill you up early on in the night. For my entree', I selected their Veal Marsala with green beans.  Everything is very flavorful just I remembered them to be.  Green beans were fresh and I literally wiped the plate down with them to get the very last bit of that marsala sauce.  YUM!
Lastly for dessert, we had tiramisu.  Who doesn't like tiramisu?!  Nobody!  Light mascarpone cream and coffee soaked ladyfingers.  This is as delightful as you're going to get.  Totally made my night!

One thing I like about Damian's is that if you go there before going to a show at the theatre district, they have 2 shuttles that takes you there.  They take you to Jones Hall, Alley, Wortham, and Hobby Center.  For special events, something really big like Paul McCartney, they may make an exception to go to Minute Maid or Toyota Center.  Check with them when you make a dinner reservation.  The good thing is, you grab an early dinner, let your server know you're going to a show, they'll make sure you get on that shuttle.  You don't have to fuss about parking and getting stuck when you are out of the show, and afterwards, you can come back for dessert.  It's a great arrangement, and the only restaurant that I know of offer this service.
When we were there, companies are having happy hour for their staff at their banquet room.  They have a wine room for private dinners.  Not to mention they have a gluten free items noted on the menu in case you're interested.  And their servers have been there for a long time which knows their stuff.  Being that this is the restaurant's 30th year, they must be doing something right.

Ruggle's Green

To contact us Click HERE
For gluten free 'fast food', aside from Elevation Burger, your other best bet is probably Ruggles Green.  This round I got their Kobe Burger with Swiss cheese and on gluten free buns.   There's tons of decisions to be made just ordering a burger; do you want lettuce, tomato, pickle, mayo, ketchup, greens, Swiss or American or mozzarella cheese, fruit, fries, sweet potato fries, or quinoa salad.  Told you, tons of decisions to make....
Anyway, burger with Swiss, greens and tomatoes on gf bun with sweet potato fries.  I will say that they are super generous with the fries because it's pretty much the entire plate.  The burger is good and juicy, the buns were a tad dry and too toasted, so it's dry against meat.  The mayo is their peach chipotle mayo sauce, so it has a little kick to it... but still pretty good.

Corner Table

For a birthday dinner we went back to Corner Table.  Tip about that place, there are parking across the street and down the street, but be smart and read signs.  Otherwise, they do have a valet for the compound. We ordered the Paleo Buffalo Chicken Wings.   They battered it with almond meal and fried it.  It is spicy and they do have the blue cheese dip to counter act the spiciness   Out of curiosity, I ordered the Paleo Chicken Enchiladas.  I had high hopes for it, but too bad it wasn't for me.  They used coconut flour to make the tortilla, the chicken mixed with the tomato and cilantro puree very well, just that the coconut flour is sweet and it just confuses my palette.  The chicken with the sauce was great, though. The dish came with a side of veggies.  As you can see, they have asparagus, grilled zucchini, carrots, broccoli, and that mashed up bit is not potato, that was cauliflower.  This time it also confuses me because the spices used on it isn't what I had expected to go with the cauliflower.
At night it does feel much more upscale, and it is still a good upscale gluten free choice.  The GM is super friendly, they have a sommelier on site and has wide array of wine to impress you.  I'm sure once the 2 bars in the complex opens up, you'll get even a wider arrange of drinks available to you.

Flora & Muse

It's really rear that I get to be a lady who lunch, little to say to even have time to have afternoon tea...Lucky for us, Flora & Muse has afternoon tea during the week.  They have a tea set for 2 for $30.  Of course it comes in a set.  I was hoping they have some fancy tea, but instead, they came over with a box of tea to choose from... ok, Jasmine it is.The tea set comes in 2 tiers.  The top tier is dessert, which is common.
The top tier has peanut butter cookie with jam (that was unusual and confuse my taste buds), poppy seed muffin (which is exactly what you think it is), and chocolate dipped sugar cookie (yummy)! The bottom tier has all the savory sandwiches.  And as you can see, they are tiny and finger size. They have 2 of everything, on this corner they have Curry Chicken Salad sandwich (left), and Roast Beef & Cheese sandwich. Here you have Smoked Salmon brochette (center), Turkey & Lettuce sandwich (right), and Cucumber & Tomato sandwich (back).
I liked the sugar cookie, the curry chicken was a surprise, but what was the true surprise was the mini bread that the sandwiches came in.  The bread tasted like a the Brazilian Cheese Bread, but I'm sure it's not.  I guess overall, I was expecting because of their patisserie that these tea set would've been better.  In a way that they use their kitchen to do more creative dessert, or have a little scone.  Scones goes with tea so well...
Flora and Muse only serve tea during the week from 2p - 5p.  You don't need to have a reservation, just let the server know you're here for the tea set, and they'll do the rest.  In terms of parking, if you park right in front of store fronts, expect to pay for parking.  $1.50 for 30 mins, $3 for 1 hr, or $15 for 5 hours.  Those are your options, and the parking machines do accept credit cards and cash.

Petite Sweet

For my friend's birthday, instead of a cake, we went for Petite Sweet so everyone can get whatever they want.I got the Pistachio & Chocolate macarons.  I just love that their pistachio filling has real pistachios in it.  The chocolate filling is rich and full.
I am disappointed that lately when I went to Petite Sweet, the flavor choices has become less and less available.  One of the attraction of going there is their fillings are well done, and the variety available at any given time.  While I understand economically that's not feasible, the limitation also is a turn off.  While the once perfect shell was the macs to dreamed of, nowadays it's a hit or miss.  Some days you take a bite and the shell cracks and fall apart.  If you get them fresh enough, it's perfect.  Keep up with the quality!!!!

Stationary & The Art of the Love Letter

To contact us Click HERE

Yes, Valentine's Day just happened but love should be spread throughout the year. So I wanted to share some tips on the art of the love letter and a few LOVE-ly cards to give to someone you care about!
Big Kiss Card from Bobs Your Uncle

  • Getprepared-Gather your letter writing tools: pen and paper. Whether it’s notebookpaper or fine stationary, be sure to write legibly and don’t even think aboutemailing or texting your love letter.

·        Getin the mood-Make sure you have privacy when writing your love letter and thatthe atmosphere is one that welcomes an open heart.
·        Hello,my name is: Use pet names or nicknames that you may only use when alone toaddress your significant other. Thiswill make him/her smile and that is a great way to begin a heartfelt letter.
The One from Paper Polite

·        Leaveyour heart on the page- You want to be sure that your significant other knows thatthere is no doubt in how you feel about him/her because your emotions shouldooze from the page.
·        Getspecific-Share examples of how he/she means the world to you and makes yourheart sing.
·        Thechosen one-Tell him/her how lucky you are to have them in your life. Sharepersonal anecdote andmemories of how you met and the impact it has in your life.
·        Sealedwith a kiss- Mail your love letter to your significant other for a nicesurprise between bills and junk mail. Another alternative is leaving the notesomewhere he/she will find it like their pillow or jacket pocket. Bzzzz: To elevate the gift experience try custom cards, if you are in the Charlotte area Olive Paper is a great option or you can try etsy.com for some other options. In the end, the words that you write will matter most of all--it's the gift and the card itself is the wrapping:)Pin It!

One Great . . . wild rice salad

To contact us Click HERE

Like most of us these days, I'm trying to stay on track on my resolution promises: Eat more whole grains, keep it healthy and save a little money while I'm at it.

Packing lunch most workdays helps with the money part. It's tough finding something uptown that's under $10 by the time you add in beverage and tip. And since so much of what's available around my office is fried or cheesed, packing is healthier too.

Wild rice takes longer to cook than white rice. (Yes, I know - wild rice isn't actually a rice, it's a wild grain.) But once it's cooked, you can add a few things to it and get a tasty lunch with lots of flavor and texture. It's good cold, so it's easy to pack it along, and you can round it out with a piece of fruit or something meat-like if you must.

For this recipe, you don't want the wild rice and long grain mixes you find in many supermarkets. You want real wild rice. You can usually find it at Trader Joe's, or look in the bulk bins at health-focused supermarkets.  This makes about 3 servings, enough to take for a couple of lunches. Or you can double it for 6 servings.

Nutty Wild Rice Salad

Adapted from "The Silver Palate Cookbook," by Sheila Lukins and Julee Rus

1/2 cup raw wild rice, rinsed
4 cups chicken stock (or half stock and half water)
1/2 cup shelled pecan halves, or chopped pecans
1/4 cup golden raisins
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1 tablespoon grated orange rind
2 to 3 green onions, diced (white and some of the green part)
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
Salt and pepper to taste

PLACE  the wild rice in a mediium saucepan with the stock. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer and cook, covered, about 30 minutes. Uncover and continue cooking about 15 minutes, until the grains taste tender and the liquid is mostly gone. (Add more stock or water if it starts to cook dry.)
ADD the remaining ingredients and toss to mix well. Serve warm, at room temperature or chilled.

YIELD: 3 to 4 servings.

Charlotte Wine & Food time already?

No, it isn't quite a Charlotte Wine & Food Weekend year yet. The next festival doesn't happen until April 23-26, 2014. But it takes a lot of work to pull it together, which is why they hold the official kickoff a year in advance.
So: Tickets go on sale Feb. 7 for the April 20 kickoff for the April 2014 festival. Got that?
The kickoff party is from 6:30 to 11 p.m. at Founders Hall, 100 N. Tryon St., with the theme "Motown @ Uptown." There's food from Aria Tuscan Grill, wine (a lot of wine), live and silent auction items and dancing. $250 includes a VIP dinner beforehand at Aria, $125 gets you the party and free parking. And there's a new  ticket level, called Young Aficionados, that's $75 for ages 21-35 for just the party.

N.C. apple crop took a whopping hit

To contact us Click HERE

Early predictions in August that North Carolina had lost 80 percent of the apple crop  turned out to be pretty close to the final number. A report released Jan. 25 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture found  that our state's apple losses were huge, at 76% of the crop.

Total production was 33.5 million pounds, down from 140 million pounds in 2011. Put another way: The 2011 average was 20,300 pounds per acre and 2012's number was 5,000 pounds per acre.

The apple loss was caused by a warm winter and a sudden spring freeze. And the losses were hard to predict early on. Because of the peaks and valleys in our apple-growing sections of the mountains and the way cold air moves around them, some farms lost everything while others kept most of their crop.

It was a dark spot in an otherwise good agricultural year in N.C. A few more numbers on 2012:

  • Strawberry production was up 4 percent from 2011, with a value of $29.4 million, up about $2 million.
  • Blueberry production was up 9 percent, to 40.5 million pounds, valued at $71 million.
  • Peaches stayed the same, at 5,300 tons, although the value of that crop increased 21 percent, to $6.2 million.
  • The peanut yield was a record 4,100 pounds per acre. Total production was nearly 435 million pounds, up 49%.
  • Those all-important sweet potatoes, one of N.C.'s best crops, matched the 2011 yield of 200 hundredweight per acre, even though the total was down 3 percent because farmers planted 2,000 fewer acres than 2011.

Maker's Mark cuts the alcohol level in its bourbon

To contact us Click HERE

I took a week off from food world last week and look what happened: Maker's Mark, maker of the bourbon with the red wax top, has announced an Impending Bourbon Shortage:

"Demand for our bourbon is exceeding our ability to make it, which means we’re running very low on supply." That's from a letter to Maker's Mark "ambassadors," people who sign up on the distillery website to receive information and occasional offers like ice cube trays shaped like bottles of Maker's Mark. (Yes, after touring distilleries last year to work on a book on bourbon, a member of my family is on the Ambassador list.)

The letter, from Chief Operating Officer Rob Samuels and Chair Emeritus Bill Samuels Jr., goes on to announce that Maker's Mark will decrease the alcohol by volume of its product by 3%.

From the letter: "This will enable us to maintain the same taste profile and increase our limited supply so there is enough Maker’s Mark to go around, while we continue to expand the distillery and increase our production capacity. We have both tasted it extensively, and it’s completely consistent with the taste profile our founder/dad/grandfather, Bill Samuels, Sr., created nearly 60 years ago.  We’ve also done extensive testing with Maker’s Mark drinkers, and they couldn’t tell a difference."

This, of course, raises a few questions:

Will Maker's Mark lower the price by 3% to reflect the lower volume of alcohol?

Will the alcohol return to its previous level when the distillery is expanded?

And: In a world in which 1-quart mayonnaise jars no longer hold a quart and 1-pound jars are 12 ounces, is nothing sacred?

Bread & Chocolate: Bread Pudding

To contact us Click HERE
Bill

Bread & Chocolate’s bread pudding is a caramelized crust topping heavy, moist folds of bread, with pockets of cinnamon flavor.  Raisins are limited to the top.  That is a risky and often lazy approach, because bread pudding needs significant flavor and texture bursts to prevent a bland core.  However, this dish maintained decent flavor throughout.

Bread & Chocolate serves this bread pudding cold, which helps condense the dish and spread the flavor elements.  It really should be served with a dairy-based sauce like crème anglais.  This bread pudding was very good, but an accompanying sauce, relatively thick and cold, might have elevated it to divine.  It deserves a great rating.
I've only tried one other bread pudding in DC, at Elephant & Castle.  That is good, in part because it is served with a sauce.  However, I rank this one just a bit higher.

Brasserie Beck: Carrot cake muffins with cream cheese filling

To contact us Click HERE
Bill

Brasserie Beck turned a muffin into a serious dessert. The muffin is lightly toasted and served warm, so a slightly crunchy layer covers the warm, moist cake. The first time I tried these muffins, a squeeze of sweet cream cheese filling spread out a bit around the muffin top, and poked about an inch into the core. The whole thing was topped off with a splash of powdered sugar. The interplay of the crunchy shell and nearly gooey inner muffin, with the decadent touch of cream cheese is excellent, and carrot cake isn't even one of my favorites.

Muffins usually suffer from a massive decrease in quality between the top and bottom, but this muffin's delightful core will draw you to start at the bottom. The first time I tried these, I would have preferred the cream cheese filling to extend through more of the muffin's depth. However, I went back the next day, in large part for more muffins, and Brasserie Beck corrected that. The restaurant now inserts the cream cheese from the bottom of the muffin. The picture is of the earlier version, where the filling was inserted from above and erupted over the top. That’s the only change. These muffins deserve a divine rating. If you don’t like carrot cake, you should try them anyway. If you like carrot cake, it is your destiny to know these muffins.
