hello everyone - i apologize for being gone for so long. have i told you guys i was able to go to asia for about 1.5 months to do some volunteer work with PROJECT VIETNAM? i left early march and just recently came back - i've learned so much about myself as well as the people of Vietnam & Cambodia. this was a once in a lifetime opportunity i couldn't pass up.
i came back with a greater appreciation for all that i have here in the U.S and look forward to venturing back to asia after my 2 years of premed classes to do some more volunteer work. on this trip i've realized that i want to go into pediatric dentistry where the work is as rewarding minus the stress and liability. dr. kieu who founded this organization allowed me to roam around our primary, dental, pharmacy and ophthalmology team. with a taste of each branch i was able to weigh my options and developed a new found love for ped-dentistry.
we woke up everyday at exactly 5:50am and worked in the humid vietnam heat until 5 or 6pm. our main objective was to bring free healthcare to the rural areas of Vietnam that needed it most. this year we worked in vinh long a small city near the mekong delta whose known for their abundance of fruits (yum!) needless to say we were able to successfully serve almost 4000 patients on this mission! whoo! hoo!
after our medmission was over some of us spent time in asia with family and friends and i was fortunate enough to visit cambodia w. my cousin. it was a bit surreal seeing the epic ruins in siem reap & phnom penh. cambodia is still a poor country and the contrast between the wealthy and the poor is like night and day. in the near future id like to go back to cambodia to provide free healthcare. lets just say it'll be something i have to have on my bucket list.
