Head to any basement of a department store in Japan and you will discover a labyrinth of food vendors selling delicious prepared goodies. Dylan and I always hit up these basement floors before heading onto a shinkansen (bullet train). We'd split up and agree to meet after 20-30 minutes. The best part, finding out what we bought for our journey on the train.
The best department store basements are of course at the busiest stations. Prices for individual pieces of food are quite reasonable, but once you start choosing everything your stomach desires, a lunch can easily add up to $30. Choose wisely.
If you do your research, you'll find out that a lot of these vendors are famous Japanese companies. You really are getting some of the best of Japan in these basements. Who knew basements can be so non-creepy.
